Assignment 0: Envisioning the Future

What inspires you about space? What do you dream about? Fear? Love? Wonder?

What is it you want to learn about this semester? Explore? Investigate?

What kinds of space images do you draw from? Images from the Hubble Telescope? Are you a Star Wars Fan? Star Trek? NASA from the 60s? NASA of today? International space explorations?

From where do you draw inspiration? Curiosity and Robots? Rockets? Carl Sagan? Europa?

Are you hopeful for our future? Or do you think the future will be more dystopian?

As you look through imagery of space, think about:

  • When were these images made? In what social, political, and cultural context?
  • Is it Science, Science Fiction, or Fantasy?
  • Are they hopeful or dystopic images? Why do you think that might be?
  • If they are artist speculation, how have humanities visions of the future changed?
  • What is the role of the spaces and the architecture in the visions these images are depicting? How does the architecture help define these worlds?
