Assignment 1: Charette the Solar System

Choose a solar system object from the following (or find an exoplanet):

(1) Define the metrics of the object.

Define the Day-Night Cycle (It’s a moon of another planet? An asteroid? Define a new idea of cycles and time.)

Define the distance of this object from Earth (In time? Scale? Means of Transportation? Decide yourself.)

Define the scale of the object (By comparison? To what? Decide your own metrics.)

Describe a major planetary feature in relationship to the scale of a human body, structure, and “city.”

Identify local resources/elements, identify what we use those for on earth.

Identify temperature and pressure ranges, identify any earth creature that can survive in it.

(2) Design an (entity/being/architecture) that would survive/evolve in this environment.

What would it be made out of?

What would it eat? / Where would it get it’s energy? / Define its inputs and outputs in relationship to the metrics you've described

How would it move?

(the definition of life includes GROWTH, REPRODUCTION, ACTIVITY, CHANGE…. or does it?)

OR (2) Design a system to enclose and maintain a human body in this environment.

Deliverables

  • An image of the whole solar system object at X scale
  • 2 24X24 panels:
    • Planetary Metrics
    • Design System

Objectives

  • become familiar with the harshness and possibilities of the space environment
  • understand the relative nature of time and space on earth
  • don’t be afraid of the unfamiliar
  • start to look at extremophiles, the relationship of evolution and site and it’s potential architectural applications
